History of Pickleball

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States! Shocking news to many, but for those who play, this fact reinforces their passion for this very “user-friendly” racquet sport. Where did it come from? Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle, WA. Three dads – Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum – whose kids were bored with their usual summertime activities, are credited for creating the game. Pickles was the family dog that would chase after errant balls and then hide in the bushes, thus Pickle's ball which was later shortened to the namesake of pickleball.

Pickleball has evolved from the original handmade equipment and simple rules into a popular sport in the U.S. and Canada, and is rapidly gaining popularity in many other countries around the world. The rules of pickleball are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.
